Intervet delivers support for Bluetongue vaccination queries
The threat of Bluetongue and all that goes with that – from movement restrictions to vaccination strategy and from contingency plans for dealing with sick animals to how the culicoides midge spreads the virus – is the topic at the forefront of all livestock producers’ minds.
Currently, producers throughout the UK are having to deal with the implications of the tight controls associated with Protection and Surveillance Zones. Testing and bio-security during the period before a vaccine is available are essential.
During this time, planning for the onset of the vaccination period will take place. In order to assist vets throughout the UK to support farmer clients and offer the most up-to-date advice, Intervet has undertaken a number of initiatives. These include the production of a detailed presentation for vets, which they can download to deliver at client meetings.
In addition, an enquiry recording form has also been set up to allow vets to collect the names and details of anyone making enquiries about vaccination. Farmers need to inform their vet of the number of sheep and cattle they require vaccine for.
“The information we are supplying to vets aims to help them prepare and plan for the onset of vaccination. Time spent educating everyone involved in the care of livestock on everything from surveillance to vaccination protocols should help those who are able to vaccinate to do this as effectively as possible as the season progresses,” says Intervet’s Ian Anderson. “Throughout this, we must all be aware that the situation can change at very short notice, so planning and communication are essential.”
