Intervet launches analgesic and sedative
12 September 2007
Intervet UK has launched Dolorex®, a potent and effective short duration analgesic for horses and dogs containing the synthetic opioid, butorphanol.
Dolorex, which can also be used as a sedative for surgical procedures in combination with certain α2-adrenoceptors including (me)detomidine and romifidine, provides pain relief for horses with gastrointestinal tract colic and moderate visceral pain in dogs.
It acts on receptors in the central nervous system to deliver fast pain relief while still allowing more accurate diagnosis of the causal factors. Analgesia in horses occurs within 15 minutes of intravenous administration and lasts for 15-60 minutes and it lasts for 15-30 minutes after administration in dogs.
“Colic is the most common emergency in equine medicine and due to the sometimes violent and painful nature of the condition, pain control is a priority to aid diagnosis and treatment,” comments Tim Zoch, senior product manager at Intervet UK Ltd. “Dolorex is a fast and effective analgesic which treats pain associated with colic with little to no effect on gut motility.”
Available in vials of 10ml and 50ml, Intervet is currently running a buy two, get one free introductory offer for a limited period only.
