Intervet awards Bristol University students intercalation bursaries

19 April 2007

Intervet UK has awarded three students from Bristol University bursaries to enable them to intercalate during their veterinary degrees in a variety of research areas.

With a total funding of £6,000 from the Intervet Connect scheme, students awarded the bursary were Laura Cockerell, Aisling Glennie and Sarah Sheppard.

Laura Cockerell is taking a year out from her veterinary science degree to study for a BSc in anatomical science at the University of Bristol.  This intercalation year includes a research project studying osteoarthritis in the equine joint, directed by Dr Cathy Fuller and Dr Mo Sharif from the Musculoskeletal Research Group within the Anatomy Department.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s Intervet Connect funded intercalating student Harriet Brown, Aisling Glennie is studying conservation medicine at Liverpool University.  As part of her intercalation, she will be assessing the introduction of an agent for the eradication of mice that are threatening the existence of albatrosses on Gough Island, in the South Atlantic Ocean, which has one of the largest seabird colonies in the world.

The final recipient of the intercalation bursary is Sarah Sheppard who is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology at Bristol University.  Her project - researching the mechanism of action and efficacy of analgesics – is being supervised by Dr Maria Usowicz.

Jim Hungerford, general manager at Intervet UK, comments: “The intercalation bursary is just one of the initiatives supported by our Intervet Connect scheme, which facilitates educational support for students.  We wish these students every success with their research and future studies at Bristol University.”
